The Mothercraft Unit sited at Waikato Hospital has been providing a unique, publicly funded service for Families of the Midlands Health area for the past 27 years. Since its inception this service has been able to adapt to meet the needs of families as the fabric of our society and family structures have changed.

This secondary service is highly regarded by primary and other secondary referral agents as well as our community. Funded through Maternal and Child Health, the majority or referrals are to assist with baby management problems. Out of the total numbers of mothers /caregivers admitted, approximately 40% are identified as requiring support from mental health services to address mental health problems.

A small stable skilled team of nurses with a strong commitment to well child health, maternal well being and family, are able determine what may be a baby. A maternal mental health issue, or a combination of both. Full medical backup is always available, however the service maintains a nursing focus.

The unit has always had close links with mental heath services, whom 3 years ago after identifying a need appointed two psychiatric liaison nurses to support the work carried out in that unit. Their work enhances both services, and potentiality avoids or shortens admission to psychiatric wards, which may necessitate separation of mother and baby.

This presentation will include two case presentations and demonstrate how we provide a complete package of services, i.e. appropriate and timely admission, assessment, treatment discharge planning and follow up care.
